STOP THE BURNING!
Every year in Northern Thailand thousands and thousands of rai, totaling hundreds of square kilometers, are burned. Starting in September, following the end of the rainy season, and lasting into April, the entire region is engulfed in clouds of smoke. These ancient techniques of the various cultures of northern Thailand have become overloaded with a toxic mix of organic and petroleum based smoke. It’s time to change this practice amongst those who are at the root of these problems through specially designed community education programs. Our main areas of focus are the prevention of burning:
- surrounding forest
- farm and yard waste
- and most of all…plastics, rubber and other household waste
WHY DOES THIS BURNING TAKE PLACE?
- Burning forest to increase farmland
- Disposing compostable farm waste
- Clearing leaves & household waste
- Clearing forest ground cover - enabling easier access to expensive mushrooms such as Hed Hnang or Hed Top, thus increasing the yield of their harvest.
The question, “why does this burning take place?” is asked everyday by hundreds of thousands of people who live in the North of Thailand. No matter which of these reasons are given, we know there are effective solutions! There are alternatives to burning that do not have such negative repercussions to the environment, and the people around us.
HOW CAN WE INITIATE CHANGE?
We need to educate! Not just one person but the nation. A nation that is responsible for its actions, that can deliver a message to the rest of the world. Where better to start a message than at the source of the fires? This message is coming from within a smoke haze in Mae Hong Son, in the north of Thailand, where the air pollution levels reach over 200 micrograms per cubic meter of air and, even now, people around us continue to burn. The health effects include the highest rates of asthma and lung cancer in Thailand http://www.cahfs.umn.edu/prod/groups/cvm/@pub/@cvm/@cahfs/documents/content/cvm_content_429462.pdf
COMMUNITY AND LEGISLATIVE ACTION NECESSARY TO STOP THE BURNING!
Starting with our grassroots community projects, forming alliance with those in the region, we have initiated changes that are vital. We need more legislative policy in place to stop people from burning. The policy must be supported with an educational campaign that will provide an alternative to burning, and improve the overall health and environment of all those living in Northern Thailand.
We are in need of volunteers for various projects and aspects within each. We need experts in organic farming/permaculture, community outreach, forestry, graphic design, HTML programming, etc. If interested please email us!
PLEASE SUPPORT US!
We have an easy method of donation and always remember, anything helps!
Please tell everyone you know about this message and this website, and spread the word that we are going to make a change. This message will go straight to the prime minster of Thailand and the governors of all the most effected provinces in Thailand. THIS CANNOT AND WILL NOT BE IGNORED ANY MORE!
